Overview

Preserve descriptor-declared detailed token usage from adapter results and use it for Harbor accounting without changing the closed fabric.adapter/v1alpha2 AgentUsage wire shape.

Adapters can opt in by declaring and returning usage.extensions["nemo_fabric.detailed_token_usage.v1"]. NeMo Fabric carries that object into RunResult.usage.metadata, where consumers can use cache-write, reasoning, peak-request, and per-model detail. Existing adapter payloads remain valid, and this PR does not change the adapter-contract schema, generated Python contract, or generated TypeScript declarations.

Details

  • Preserve descriptor-validated usage extensions when the runtime normalizes an adapter result.
  • Read the versioned detailed-usage object in the Harbor integration. Compute inclusive input and output totals only when the selected detailed counters contain enough information. Leave incomplete totals unknown instead of substituting a misleading value.
  • Treat detailed input and output independently: any detailed accounting field for a dimension makes that dimension authoritative, with no fallback to its top-level counters. Incomplete detail leaves that total unknown, so the detailed and top-level views can diverge.
  • Document the extension boundary, per-dimension precedence, and unknown-value semantics in the adapter tutorial, Python SDK guide, maintainer guidance, and exportable integration skills.
  • Add Rust coverage for the unchanged closed contract and extension transport, plus Python coverage for inclusive, already-inclusive, incomplete, ancillary-only, and absent-detail accounting.

Breaking changes: none. The fabric.adapter/v1alpha2 contract remains unchanged. Detailed usage is an optional, descriptor-declared extension.

Validation

  • uv run pytest tests/python/test_harbor_accounting.py: 46 passed.
  • GitHub Rust checks passed on x86_64 and arm64.
  • GitHub Python checks passed for Python 3.11 through 3.14 on Linux, macOS, and Windows, including adapter compatibility, Cline, OpenCode, Qwen Code, and wheel builds.
  • GitHub TypeScript checks passed for Node 20 and 24, including adapter tests.
  • GitHub pre-commit, docs preview, and DCO checks passed.
  • just test-python: 1,881 passed, 113 skipped, with four environment/setup failures outside the changed behavior: two Relay failures associated with the inherited /etc/nemo-relay/plugins.toml configuration, a Mini SWE telemetry fixture missing command, and an unbuilt OpenCode dist/cli.js.
  • Required NVSkills CI must be rerun for the latest changed skill files.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with local_host_preserves_detailed_usage_in_metadata in crates/fabric-core/src/runtime.rs, then the detailed-usage branch in sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/integrations/harbor/fabric_agent.py and test_detailed_usage_is_authoritative_per_dimension in tests/python/test_harbor_accounting.py. The compatibility boundary is captured by v1alpha2_usage_keeps_detailed_fields_in_extensions in crates/fabric-core/src/agent_execution.rs.

  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

Adapters can observe cache-write input, reasoning output, the largest
single request, and per-model usage, but AgentUsage had no fields for
them, so adapters either dropped the data or hid it in extensions.

Add cache_write_input_tokens, reasoning_tokens,
output_tokens_include_reasoning, peak_request_input_tokens, and a
closed AgentModelUsage list to AgentUsage. input_tokens_include_cache
now also covers cache-write input. Core validates per-model entries:
non-blank model and provider, each provider and model pair once
compared case-insensitively, and a finite non-negative cost_usd.

RunUsage and run_usage() are unchanged, so consumers do not see the new
fields yet. The RunUsage cache flag description now says it can cover
cache-write input that RunUsage does not report. The adapter-contract
and SDK JSON schemas are regenerated.

Python adapters build AgentUsage through the Python contract, which
must accept the same fields and enforce the same rules as core so an
invalid result fails in the adapter instead of at the core boundary.

Add the new AgentUsage fields and AgentModelUsage with the same
counter bounds, non-blank identifiers, case-insensitive duplicate
check, and non-negative finite cost as core, with tests. Update the
SDK RunUsage docstring for the wider meaning of the cache flag.

Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
TypeScript adapters type their results against the generated contract
declarations, which must match the regenerated result schema.

Copy the regenerated agent-run-result schema, regenerate the
declarations with AgentModelUsage and the new AgentUsage fields, and
add type tests for the detailed fields, the boolean reasoning flag,
the required model identifier, and the closed model usage object.

Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
Adapter authors need to know when to report the new usage fields, what
the inclusion flags mean, and that NeMo Fabric does not yet pass the
fields to consumers.

Document the fields and per-model rules in the results tutorial and
the adapter-building skill, state that cache-write, reasoning, peak
request, and per-model usage are not copied into RunResult.usage,
describe the wider cache flag meaning in the Python SDK guide, and
point the adapter contribution skill at the shared fields.

Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
Regenerate the Rust and Python references with Rust 1.94.0. The new
AgentModelUsage page shifts the crate-wide sidebar positions, so most
Rust reference pages change only their position line.

Signed-off-by: mnajafian-nv <mnajafian@nvidia.com>
input_tokens_include_cache now covers both cache reads
(cached_input_tokens) and cache writes (cache_write_input_tokens), so
one flag cannot describe a provider that counts reads in input_tokens
but reports writes separately. Keep the single flag and state the rule
explicitly: true means both are included, false means both are
excluded, and an adapter whose provider mixes the two normalizes
input_tokens before reporting.

Update the Rust doc comments for AgentUsage and AgentModelUsage, the
Python contract docstring, the adapter results tutorial, and the
build-adapter skill, and regenerate the JSON Schemas, TypeScript
contract, and Rust API reference from the doc comments.

Walkthrough

The changes define a descriptor-declared extension for detailed token usage, preserve it in runtime usage metadata, and update Harbor accounting to use detailed counts when inclusion flags and required component counts are known.

The v1alpha2 usage object remains closed to detailed root fields. The declared extension schema accepts aggregate and per-model details, and runtime results preserve the extension in RunUsage.metadata. Documentation and guidance describe the extension and its inclusion rules.
Harbor token accounting
sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/integrations/harbor/fabric_agent.py, tests/python/test_harbor_accounting.py
Harbor uses detailed input and output fields when available. It calculates totals only when their inclusion status and required component counts are known. Existing top-level fallbacks remain when detailed fields are unavailable. Tests cover complete, incomplete, and absent detailed usage.

A valid partial detailed-usage object can make Harbor omit a known input-token total, and the SDK documentation has one product-name inconsistency. Both issues are localized, but the accounting behavior should be corrected before merge.

Requesting changes on two contract-correctness blockers: the expanded closed adapter result has no negotiated compatibility boundary, and the runtime drops newly observed usage detail while retaining legacy flags that downstream consumers interpret as complete. Please also bring the exportable integration skill into parity. I validated the exact head against the exact base with the full Python/Rust/schema/docs matrix and a real Codex + Relay + MCP multi-turn E2E. The existing execution path passes; these blockers are specific to the new detailed-usage contract. The required NVSkills check also needs to be rerun after the latest watched-path change.

sdk/python/nemo-fabric-runtime/src/nemo_fabric/integrations/harbor/fabric_agent.py (2)

858-868: Inclusive-total rule can misreport input when the flag is absent and only one component is reported.

When included is None, the function returns primary only if every component equals 0. If cache_write_input_tokens is missing, _usage_counter returns None. Then all(value == 0 ...) is False, so the total is unknown. This matches the documented rule. The fallback path has a different rule. It treats a missing cached_input_tokens as non-zero when the flag is absent. Both paths withhold the total, so the behavior is consistent. No change needed.

929-941: Fallback path can raise TypeError on malformed top-level usage.

The fallback path does input_tokens + cached_input_tokens on raw usage.get(...) values. RunUsage._normalize validates these as nonnegative integers or None, so the TypeError risk does not occur for validated results. The new detailed path uses the stricter _usage_counter. The two paths are inconsistent, but the fallback path is existing behavior. No change needed.

crates/fabric-core/src/agent_execution.rs (2)

97-97: Doc comment change on AgentUsage is fine.

The change is documentation only, so AgentUsage and its schema behavior stay unchanged.

Preserve top-level input usage for partial detailed input

When the detailed extension contains only an input ancillary field, such as cache_write_input_tokens, use the existing top-level input accounting branch. The current condition selects the detailed branch, _inclusive_token_count returns None because detailed input_tokens is absent, and Harbor drops the available normalized top-level total.

896-896: Clarify that the inclusion flag covers cache writes.

This paragraph links input_tokens_include_cache to cached_input_tokens but does not state that the flag covers both cache reads and writes. State that scope and note that adapters must normalize input_tokens when a provider counts only one category. This matches the accounting concern raised in the previous review of skills/nemo-fabric-integrate/references/results-and-errors.md.

  • Kept the closed v1alpha2 usage contract unchanged and moved detailed usage into a versioned extension.
  • Preserved that extension through RunUsage.metadata and updated Harbor to compute totals only from complete usage data.
  • Updated the integration skill and public documentation to match the new extension path.
  • Added CodeRabbit’s missing partial-usage regression test and corrected the PR description to reflect the final design.

The two original contract blockers are resolved on this head: detailed usage now stays behind descriptor-declared extensions, runtime transport is preserved, and Harbor no longer reports provably incomplete inclusive totals. One consumer-contract gap remains: document the per-dimension precedence that the tests intentionally enforce, and correct the PR body’s opposite fallback claim.

Approved on exact head 156627241cf4216275ec62395432171ab673f918. The compatibility, accounting, skill-parity, and per-dimension precedence issues from my earlier reviews are resolved, and the added partial-detail cases make the intended unknown-over-fallback behavior explicit. I revalidated the focused Harbor path, Rust transport, generated docs, and patch hygiene; the exact-head GitHub Rust, Python, TypeScript, adapter-install, E2E, docs, pre-commit, wheel, and DCO checks are green. The required NVSkills status is still pending and remains an independent merge gate.
